When I work out on treadmills, stair-masters, stationary bicycles, elliptical trainers, and other fitness machines in the gym, I always watch the calorie counters and so do a great many other people. I’ll even sometimes keep going another few minutes to finish the next 50 or 100-calorie increment. I notice many people carefully recording the calories burnt as well as other exercise details into their fitness logs. Is this obsession worth it?

For example, I’ve always wondered how accurate are those things? Are they primarily for motivation, wildly inaccurate, or pretty close? Does it vary by machine or level of fitness or… ? I decide to investigate and find out. I was quite surprised by the results and you may be too!

It turns out that most of them use formulas derived from tests done on athletes who are young, male, and healthy – in other words that don’t accurate resemble most of us. For example, one study showed that the results were overestimated by quite a bit for heavy set women. And for those of use who may lean on the rails or somehow else make the exercise easier, like myself, this further throws off the estimated calorie burn. Most people seem to do this it appears, at least at my gym.

The most accurate are supposedly treadmills and stationary bikes. These devices have been around and studied for a long time. Others are supposedly getting more accurate with time, but it’s rumored that some manufacturers purposely estimate on the high side to make their machines more popular. That makes sense unfortunately.

The calorie counters on exercise machines are useful as a general guide but don’t expect them to be very accurate. Use them as a general guide and perhaps as motivation. I know I’ll pay less attention to the exact number of calories burnt from now on.
